As frontline healthcare professionals, pharmacists play a crucial role in combatting antimicrobial resistance (AMR), FIP reminded ministers at the 154th World Health Organization Executive Board in Geneva, Switzerland, yesterday. Speaking on behalf of FIP during the agenda item on AMR, Su Hyun Hong of the International Pharmaceutical Students’ Federation commended the One Health approach. As an early contributor to the global AMR action plan, FIP supports multisectoral actions for its implementation, she said. Ms Hong also drew attention to FIP’s recent statement of policy on mitigating AMR through antimicrobial stewardship, for which it garnered support from 156 national pharmacy organisations from over 90 countries.

During the executive board meeting this week, FIP was also part of joint statements on health emergencies, universal health coverage (UHC, one coordinated by the NCD Alliance, and one by the International Pharmaceutical Students’ Federation), and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) with organisations such as the Alliance for Health Promotion, the International College of Surgeons, the International Pediatric Association, the International Society for Quality in Health Care, and the World Health Professions Alliance.
